Hydrosols

After reading about hydrosols in James Green's Herbal Medicine Making Handbook, I was fascinated, and following his directions I have made a few since then - first, last summer with my niece, and then by myself. The most successful was my arnica flower hydrosol (made with dried arnica, even - turns out it works with dried plant material), which I have mixed with my arnica ointment for arthritis.
Has anybody else made these? And have you succeeded in getting essential oil out of the process as well as the hydrosol? James Green warns that with his home-made apparatus (which is the way we did it), you probably won't get any oil, and I haven't. I am so tempted to buy some of the lovely gear that is for sale online, but can't afford it.
I would love to hear other people's experiences - please jump in!
