I wait 10 minutes. It can be less if time is of the essence.
I then strain it into another mug through a kitchen towel; or a lint free cloth (even a hanky might do).
I haven't made an infusion any other way. I also leave the plant matter in the first cup for when I make another brew: fresh matter makes a stronger second brew; dry matter makes a weaker second brew. But different plants vary with strength.
For more than one person, making the infusion in a teapot before straining into mugs is an idea. Unless you do that already.
Much later, After work, I can come home and clean out the French Press, saving the stuff in it for compost. (or if I'm REALLY lazy, just rinse off the plunger part, swirl water in the press part and toss teh herb and water outside to 'compost' in the front step flower pot.)

Oh, and harr13, just to clarify, sounds like this is a nice strong tea/tisane you describe, not a 6-hour steeping, mineral-rich Infuision, the way some of us define "Infusion" here? Not a bad thing at all, since the process of "put herbs in hot water, strain later" is essentially the same. Figured I'd note the context though, for others reading this.
