Food as Medicine In the Battle

Postby Lady Alinor » Wed Aug 06, 2014 4:50 pm

Three days after my 51st birthday I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, that night I'd been given a 10% chance of survival. Two years later and I'm still alive!
I owe much to my mentors, Susun Weed, Michael Moore and Michael Tierra. I had quite a stack of books by my hospital bed, I had to know what I could do for myself in my healing...that is where having the internet REALLY came in handy. It was helpful having lists of herbs, it was a bugger trying to figure out what herb would have what effect in conjunction with the chemo, steroids, antibiotics, anti-virals, and anti-fungals ...oh bother.
The list of herbs got smaller and smaller until I was down to nearly nothing, even some vitamins were an issue, they 'could' cause the chemo to not be effective.
So...Food as Medicine became my mantra, good healthful food and vinegars, so began a new research. Foods that would assist my healing, vegetarian foods (I tried to eat meat, oncologist said "try it", I did for three days, felt like I went backwards in health so went back to a plant based diet) and the food had to be as unprocessed as possible, and chemical free.
Anyway I was lost in the multitudes of web pages when I came across this bit of sunshine

As I get all my notes together I will share more.....(besides my chemo brain just caused a huge blank in my thoughts  )

Perhaps I should have the topic read...Nourishment as Medicine In the Battle...
I read this by LadyB while home in between chemo weeks (3 weeks home, 1 week in hospital, 3 weeks home...blah, blah, blah  )
http://www.susunweed.com/herbal_ezine/J ... earing.htm

She is so right, the last three paragraphs spoke LOUD to me, helped me SEE and FEEL the world, my experiences and my memories in a whole new more relevant manner.

I finally found my notes on the herbal infusions I had been hoping to use while going through chemo (2012). They were 'hidden' in plain sight...lol
My list of possible herbs included Oatstraw, Red Clover, Astragalus, Burdock, Dandelion, Slippery Elm, Horsetail (for mouth and gums), Pau d arco.
Easy Peasy right? NOT...lol..
My research led me to Oatstraw infusion, Astagalus root in soup, Dandelion as food and infusion and Slippery Elm, two hours before or after a meal.
Food as medicine! I ate lots of soup!

We need to... we must always take an active roll in our health. Never blindly trust.
The physical act of opening ourselves up to our plant helpers starts the healing. This opening can be found by touch, smell, sight, memory, taste, thought.

My blood work has been coming back as No Evidence of Disease for a little over 4 years, but I feel like I am still fighting because I am, I'm fighting to remain in remission but I worry because I still haven't recovered my Digestive Fire that was put down by 6 months of too many Anti-____'s (fill in the blank), they destroyed the good bacteria throughout my digestive system, really my whole body.
I'm eating homemade Ferments daily, eating and/or drinking ferments, I love Kombucha!
The kombucha is helping and I can feel a difference when I miss my morning 1/2 cup, but it isn't enough as I am even now coming up sensitive to even more foods (legumes perhaps), so I am going to make things real easy on my system the first meal of my day, I'm going to be eating some LONG simmered Congee aka Jook.
http://www.lotuscentergso.com/blog/heal ... dge-congee
I really liked this page because of the authors list of food add-ins and why to use them.
so tonight I have 1 cup of Brown Jasmine rice, 1 good nob of Ginger, two slices of Astragalus root, and 2 cups Alfalfa infusion+ 4 cups homemade chicken bone broth and a pinch of celtic sea salt in the slow cooker and come morning I will enjoying my Food that is also Medicine.
I hope.

Thank you Herbnut, what a coincidence I've been reading the story behind Essiac Tea.

I made the congee, need to maybe try again but add more vegetables...I dunno it wasn't very good, in fact I had a hard time chocking it down ...lol..I think I should have tasted my fresh ginger because it was perhaps a little old.
I used homemade Turkey bone stock and whole black peppercorns and a pinch of sea salt. Besides the ginger issue the flavor wasn't horrible but the texture was blech even when I added more stock!
Maybe I will try a Kitchari http://www.ayurveda.com/recipes/kitchari

We were having to cut down several wild Cherry trees and didn't want to use the wood for heat so we innocculated the wood with Shiitake plugs/spores, those spores took and soon we will be drinking Shiitake tea and sprinkling powdered shiitake on our food. My goal for the future is to obtain all ( or nearly all) of my medicinals from the land around us, either by wild-harvest or growing ourselves, so we have been putting several different ideas to the test...Shiitake got the ball rolling:
http://hwwff.cce.cornell.edu/learninga1c6.html?unit=4

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer center has a herb database and this is what it says about Shiitake:
https://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/integ ... e-mushroom

I found this write-up about Shiitake very informative in that I learned that 'Black Mushrooms' are Shiitake and I learned that IF these mushrooms are exposed to sunlight while growing they will produce large/high amounts of Vit. D...just what the PNW crone needs!

We also have Oyster Mushrooms growing which just happen to be immune system stimulants:
http://www.mushroom-appreciation.com/oy ... u0UKw.dpbs

Reishi mushrooms are already a part of my daily routine:
http://www.mushroom-appreciation.com/mu ... FzfNv.dpbs

Instructions for a Reishi Extract:
http://www.mushroom-appreciation.com/ga ... mbtg4.dpbs

I think I have found Turkey tail on the farm, all I know about it is that it isn't eaten, it is used in tea form. I found this at the Bastyr University website:
http://bastyr.edu/news/general-news/201 ... r-patients

Any mushroom 'cure' success stories?
