Re: Flu and Cold Remedies
Kezzie, I generally use the whole plant when I'm using mullein, but this time I didn't have the root. I had pulled up one big stalk, but had used the root in something else, with the bottom of the stalk. So for this syrup I used the top of the plant including flowers. Chopped it up, infused it, then...

Re: What Is A Simple?
I don't use them exclusively, but I have a preference for them and use them a lot. I do like my daily tonic, which is dandelion/nettle/red clover and sometimes burdock; but that's the only thing I think I use regularly that contains more than one herb. When I do mix, I make up each herb separately a...

I've made mullein syrup for sore throats this winter, for the first time. Nice and gooey!

Re: Green Household Magic
I have a pot of thyme on my kitchen windowsill. Thyme has been my best friend since I was a small child - lately, when I take her off the sill at night (because it's too cold for her on the windowsill at night), I've spent just a few minutes with her breathing in her scent and thanking her for being...

Lady A, I have a gingerbread recipe that I love, but I will definitely try this one - the crystallised ginger sounds as if it would make it absolutely fantastic!

I envy you, Lady A - we just had 14 inches of snow! No nettles showing here!
I take a couple of teaspoons of nettle/clover/dandelion vinegar every morning for my vitamins. Just added some burdock vinegar to this latest batch!

Speaking of ginger, I have a recipe that doesn't require any heating but does take time - as in a couple of weeks. Peel and slice fresh ginger root, put it in a jar, pour honey over it, stopper it tightly, leave to infuse! Both the pieces of ginger and the honey end up delicious.

Lady A, just curious, why don't you allow canola oil in your home? I don't use it for herbal preparations but I've always found it useful in cooking.

Re: Which oil is the best oil?
I have come to prefer olive oil the vast majority of the time. I can't quite say why, but it does last a long time and it feels like an old and authentic kind of oil to me. When I was learning to make herbal oils 20 years ago, all the recipes i found said to use sweet almond oil; now that's a very n...
