Re: Poison ivy/oak/sumac

To reduce the itching, oatmeal baths (or oatmeal compress for smaller spots) are wonderful. To remove the plants from your garden or area, I'm not sure other than good gloves and strong arms to pull it. However, Ivy is a pioneer plant and usually turns up in rougher soil to prepare it for other plan...

Re: Double extracts

Interesting. I've never done such, but also would unscientifically caution agaisnt the "water gets out the useless stuff" advice. As for a Water infusion and an alcohol infusion, unless you are using pure 95%+ alcohol such as Everclear(tm) or similar product to make your tinctures, regular...

Re: Nourishing Herbal Infusions

I personally use a quart canning jar to "brew" my infusions, but in the morning, I pour the whole batch into a big French Press, and just push the plunger to strain, just as you would when making coffee. Takes about a minute, max. Much later, After work, I can come home and clean out the F...

Re: Snowdrops - Are they edible?

I also have heard that snowdrops are quite solidly on the toxic side, ... HOWEVER, I also have a vague half-remembered comment somewhere that mentioned using it medicinally, in the same CAUTIOUS and LIMITED manner that poke or foxglove or such are used. But in general, yeah, I wouldn't risk it until...

Re: Anxiety and Panic Attacks

Sounds like you have a bit of a handle on things, even being aware of them, and this is excellent! My go-to for anxiety is Motherwort tincture for acute "AHHH" moments, but you mention that spikes heart rate sometimes too. Also, The standard daily infusions of Nettle and Oatstraw help me i...

Re: climate change

I too went through a solid year of strange cognitave dissonance regarding my work in IT computer support at a large company, balanced with a homestead farm and natural herbal healing and current plans to build a sustainable passive solar strawbale house, etc etc... Then I found a bit of solace in so...

Re: Dandelion root herbal infusion ???

I drink Dandelion root tea fairly frequently as my morning "coffee", mixed with bit Chicory and a touch of Licrice root, Steeped for a good half hour while I get ready for the day, so it's good and strong. (which is like a semi-infusion, I suppose) :) However, I can also recommend tincturi...

Re: Wise women directory

I beleive there is a list on facebook of a few folks, (just "Name - Town/state/area", no contact details) but will have to track it down. For the forums here, it's a bit more work, but you can private-message anyone by browsing the member listing of the site. :) Sorted by "post count&...

Re: Best way to store dried herbs

Generally, when I've used paper bags to dry and store some herbs, I just fold/roll down the top tightly. (did you ever buy bulk coffee beans? you know how those bags fold down and have bits of stiffer wires to fold over and keep shut? Kinda like that. :) Since you are storing, not drying it yourself...

Re: Dried Motherwort

I would use the general directions for dried herb tinctures: http://www.susunweed.com/herbal_ezine/October07/wisewoman.htm I've never tried dried Motherwort, but if you were blessed with some, why not?! :D (I agree with ItalianBee that while fresh herbs say to fill your jar/bottle to the brim lightl...
